About the Griffieon Family Farm
FARM HISTORY
The Griffieon Farm, located just north of Ankeny, was designated a Century Farm in 2002. Our family has proudly farmed in the Ankeny area since 1862. Today, our grandchildren are the seventh generation to live on the land north of town and call it home.
We operate a diversified family farm raising beef cattle, chickens, turkeys, pigs, sheep, and horses, along with corn, soybeans, oats, and alfalfa. Since beginning farm tours in 1987, we have welcomed countless children and adults from the Ankeny area to experience life on the farm firsthand. We have hosted international visitors from around the globe.
Our children began raising pastured poultry more than 25 years ago and a direct to consumer meat business began. Our Limousin beef herd descends from stock that has been part of our farm since 1960. All of our meat is humanely raised, antibiotic-free, and contains no added hormones. Our goal is to provide high-quality, value-added products that “meat” the needs of our customers while caring for and sustaining the environment.
In addition, we rent four acres to local gardeners for vegetable production. Fresh produce can be purchased from Yer Yang at the Uptown Ankeny Farmers Market. As urban growth continues to expand around our farm, we hope to increase awareness of the world-class soils surrounding Ankeny and the importance of preserving local agriculture. We also believe strongly in the value of local food security and a community-based food system. Knowing where your food comes from — and how it was grown and cared for — matters.
Thank you for supporting our family farm with every bite.
